FRIED PIE AND HUMBLE PIE

Travel lesson/life lesson: When you see the opportunity, take it.

The TransAmerica Trail doesn’t pass through areas with good shopping. You will not find the motorcycle tires you want when you need them on the TAT. Our Africa Twin’s rear 150/80-18 tire was worn but no one had them (not even in Nashville, Tennessee). We phone ordered one at Cycle Gear in Little Rock, Arkansas and diverted off the TAT 45 miles each way to get our fat rear knobby. Now, in the course of this Arkansas diversion, Caleb and I noticed several signs touting “Fried Pie”. We decided we should consume some in the interest of cultural enlightenment. But we rode on, awaiting more “Fried Pie!” opportunities. They did not come. Travel lesson/life lesson: When you see the opportunity, take it.

Travel lesson/life lesson: If you’re not naturally humble, humility may be forced upon you.

In the course of crossing Oklahoma, around June 20, we found ourselves just over the panhandle border in Liberal, Kansas before dipping back down into Oklahoma to continue westward travel. In heat of 104 F. we chilled in a gas station store then headed out around 7 pm to get back on the TAT, ride a few miles, and camp. The skies to the west were sullen deep gray, looking not so friendly. The boys said, “Let’s stay in town and set up camp somewhere now!” The Dad said, “We’ll be fine; have a spirit of adventure.” You may have seen Caleb’s video of the stormy sequences that followed. In it, he kindly does not mention that it was because of the Dad that they were out in that storm. As the video indicates, brisk sideways winds began a few miles down our dirt road. They became more fierce and 8-10 miles out, I said, “Aim for the highway in the distance where you see the big trucks driving towards town.” The wind became fierce enough to push the boys towards the shoulder. Rain began that was pouring a deluge by the time we found the first motel in sight. The loudest thunder exploded. It was a bit scary riding in it and we were WET. It would have been better had I listened to my sons.
Travel lesson/life lesson: If you’re not naturally humble, humility may be forced upon you.

“Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God; that He may exalt you in due time. Casting all your care upon Him, for he cares for you.” IPet5:6,7
