We received the bikes from Honda! 2017 Africa Twin, CRF250L, and CRF250L Rally. We spend our first 2 days headed east to touch the Atlantic Ocean to begin our trip.

Thanks, Ross man.
Hope you can meet us at the end around July 11.:The green Pacific at Port Orford, OR. Riding through Tennessee farmlands yesterday, we saw lots of those huge cylindrical hay bales all “shrink-wrapped” in white plastic and it reminded me of your Diaper Genie’s output about 20 years ago.
Hey we are loving watching your adventure!!

Your blog gives me CHILL bumps every time I watch or look at it. Thanks for letting us live vicariously through your excellent pics, sketches, and video’s….especially the beautiful Drone shots. Great job Caleb…go DJI!!! No all you need is an Infrared Gimbal-cam from FLIR!
Yes go DJI! There innovation recently has been incredible. Maybe one day we will get the thermal camera in a retail drone.
Excellent job Caleb. Stoked for you boys!
Beautiful starting video, again, on the road my Harley could keep up, in the dirt though it would be a land anchor. which of you are the pilot for the camera drone, that really is a nice touch, I can only imagine all that you have to plug in to recharge every evening. God speed and safe travels. Bob.
Thanks Rob! It is a lot of charging to keep up with. And I am in charge of the Drone. I use a DJI Mavic for my shots.
Thanks, Robt., for the good wishes. Nice meeting you outisde M.cD’s, often our blogging office … even though their WiFi is often too too s l o w
I’m absolutely loving your Vlog. Doing the TAT with my sons is a dream that I hope to make true when I retire.
How did you convince Honda to loan you the bikes? Any regrets on the heavy Africa Twin? I ride a BMW 1200GS, but I’d do the TAT on my Yahama TW200 or KTM 400.
The drone footage is absolutely fantastic.
This is my favorite moto video since “Long Way Down”.
Awesome! Glad you are enjoying our work 🙂
Getting the bikes was a bit of a miracle. My Dad wrote an article for Cycle World when he crossed the Sahara on his motorcycle in the 90s. When we started planning this trip he sent a letter to Bonnier Group (publisher of Cycle World, Motorcyclist Magazine, and others) describing our plans. One of the editors actually remembered his article and suggested that they might be able to hook us up with Hondas. And they did!
The Africa Twin was too heavy in the really technical sections and the 250s were a bit underpowered (although preferable to the AT when the going got tough). I would recommend something in the > 250 and <= 650 range. A 1200GS might make it but it definitely isn't the best choice.
Craig,
Thanks for the great comments.
A couple days ago, I sent a pic of us with bikes out in the middle of some Oregon forest to Paul and Caleb, with the comment, “Can you believe we did this?” All the work and sweat and problems and amazing wilderness and times together almost seem surreal. It was certainly a unique once in a lifetime experience. Maybe there will be one more!
So great to have family and boys like this. Including the middle guy and wife who stayed home.
Thank God for them.

Hi,
First have to say that I loved your vlog. It was both entertaining and beautiful to watch (videography is excellent!).
I’m looking at purchasing a Honda Rally for myself. I used to dirt bike when I was much younger and looking to take it up again. The Rally seems to offer the best of both worlds, road and trail capability (I realize it may not be perfectly suited to more rugged trails but that’s ok, I expect to be doing more ‘tame’ trails in my travels).
One thing I have read about the Rally is the somewhat soft suspension. Being a bigger guy (6’4″, 220 lbs) I’m wondering whether I should get the preload of the rear suspension tightened to better fit my size.
What I was wondering was whether your bikes had been customized at all before the start of your trek, especially the suspension on the Rally (to handle a rider plus gear)?
Thanks, and looking forward to mode adventures from you guys!
